About Northern Edition:

In April 2008, pianist-composer Dave Stapleton formed Edition Records with photographer Tim Dickeson. Driven by an uncompromising love of music and a quest to release the highest quality music by world-class creative musicians, Edition has developed a formidable reputation as one of Europe’s most innovative and forward-thinking record labels.

Recently described as ‘one of the most vital record labels in jazz music’ by the York Post, Edition has released albums by a wealth of international musicians with a particular focus on Scandinavian artists. With Northern Edition BBC radio presenter and authority on all things from the North, Fiona Talkington curates a snapshot of some of the most captivating, meditative, sublime and beautiful music from the Edition catalogue.

About Each Track - by Fiona Talkington

Track 1
Oddarrang The Sage
Album: In Cinema

Finnish band Oddarang, under the guidance of the brilliant drummer Olavi Louhivuori, has a clarity of sound and texture mixed with a deep emotive undercurrent. ‘The Sage’ knocks me sideways from the very start with that compulsive bass playing from Lasse Lindgren and those eloquent guitar riffs. Where we end up in this particular movie I have no idea but I love it!

Track 2
Spin Marvel Dust in Eyebeam
Album: The Reluctantly Politicised Mr James

Are we talking ‘noir’? Yes I think we are. Never underestimate the brilliance of British drummer Martin France. As well as being a backbone of the UK scene he’s been out there foraging in Norway for many years and creating one of the finest Anglo-Norwegian musical collaborations in Spin Marvel. His incisive and lyrical drumming fires this track, alongside the brilliant sound designs of Terje Evensen. Tim Harries and John Paricelli help to paint this dark world while the trumpet of Nils Petter Molvaer, so often at his best in Spin Marvel company, shines through.

Track 3
Marius Neset Boxing
Album: Birds

Marius Neset makes me smile. His music is so witty, so full of contrapuntal skirmishes, brimming with confidence. ‘Boxing’ is an unforgettable track, delightfully cheeky, yet with space for some gorgeous playing from Jim Hart on vibes, and that instantly recognisable Jasper Høiby bass sound. Ivo Neame’s piano playing and Anton Eger’s drumming pitch things perfectly to allow a busy track to still have that Nordic space.

Track 4
Daniel Herskedal The Mistral Noir
Album: Slow Eastbound Train

One of Marius Neset’s regular sparring partners is the Norwegian tuba player Daniel Herskedal. Over the years he’s shown himself to be not just a superb performer, a great ambassador for the tuba’s sense of lyricism and agility, but also a composer of deep imagination. ‘The Mistral Noir’ is simple, and unforgettable.

Track 5
Alexi Tuomarila Trio Seven Hills
Album: Seven Hills

One of the many great things about Edition Records is the way it’s become a forum for musical exchange amongst its players. Drummer Olavi Louhivuroi turns up again in an album by the Finnish pianist Alexi Tuomarila, one of the strongest emergent pianists and composers on the European jazz scene. His playing is hugely energetic and yet gently spoken. The stroke of genius here is the inclusion of Norwegian bassist Mats Eilertsen who has this ability to pluck sounds from the heavens themselves.

Track 6
Per Oddvar Johansen Let’s Dance
Album: Let’s Dance

Per Oddvar Johansen has played a huge part in Norwegian music over many years and has worked extensively with such groundbreaking figures as Helge Lien, Christian Wallumrød and Petter Wettre. He brings his own imaginative drive to everything he does and his solo debut album ‘Let’s Dance’ on Edition Records shines a spotlight on a musician who has deserved the attention for a long time.

Track 7
Eyolf Dale Furet
Album: Wolf Valley

Eyolf Dale is one of Norway’s busiest pianists, a major player in many projects as well as his own highly respected solo work. Now he’s brought together eight musicians he’s called his ‘Norwegian idols’, a truly starry line-up including Rob Waring on vibes, Hayden Powell on trumpet, Gard Nilssen on drums, Per Zanussi on bass, Eyolf’s Albatrosh duo partner André Roligheten on sax, trombonist Kristoffer Kompen and violinist Adrian Løseth Waade. Together they create intriguing musical journeys.

Track 8
Phronesis Eight Hours
Album: Alive

Over the years Danish bass player Jasper Høiby has inspired so many musicians and listeners. His live performances have an infectious energy and sense of purpose and great humour. His trio Phronesis continues to thrill audiences to this day, but here’s a track from their 2010 album Alive showcasing their unique sound in an era of multiple outstanding Nordic piano trios. With the irrepressible Ivo Neame on piano and American drummer Mark Guiliana this is a state of the art trio.

Track 9
Verneri Pohjola Cold Blooded
Album: Bullhorn

The Finnish trumpeter Verneri Pohjola has an impressively wide palette of sounds. His playing is mean, moody or chilling, or seductive, lyrical and passionate in turns. With his Finnish all-star quartet of Aki Rissanen on piano, Antti Lötjönen on bass and Teppo Mäkynen on drums this is a compulsive album. ‘Cold Blooded’ shows some of Verneri’s many moods.

Track 10
Dave Stapleton North Wind
Album: Flight

Edition Records founder, director, producer, pianist and composer Dave Stapleton gets the opportunity to collaborate with some of his musicians and indulge his own inspirations from the Nordic countries and beyond. Norwegian Marius Neset is on sax, Finnish Olavi Louhivuori on drums, with Dave Kane on double bass. The Brodowski String Quartet undperins Dave’s classical sensibilities which infuse his compelling improvisations. ‘North Wind’ brings everyone together in music which is both raw and beautiful, ultimately brimming over with fun, and ends with a gentle smile.

Track 11
Drifter Breathing Out My Soul
Album: Flow

Finnish pianist Alexi Tuomarila makes another appearance, this time with his Belgian based quartet featuring the saxophonist Nicolas Kummert. They reformed for this Edition release, and realised how much more they enjoyed the music they were playing together. Ten years apart has worked wonders! This is a striking track by Nicolas Kummert giving his vocals free rein, alongside Axel Gilain on bass and Teun Verbruggen on drums.

Track 12
Daniel Herksedal and Marius Neset Neck of the Woods
Album: Neck of the Woods

Whoever else they play with, when Daniel and Marius are back together again something special happens. This unlikely combination of saxophone and tuba is something new, something wonderful with this two exceptional musicians. With the Swedish male voice choir the Svanholm Singers they’ve penned a celebration of music itself.
